8.6 billion. That’s the number of packages that U.S. consumers will have delivered domestically this year, according to projections.
This means that the parcel, warehouse, and distribution industries will need to be more efficient in 2020 than ever before. And that efficiency starts with Supply Chain.
These industries, as you well know, are already competing for lowest cost, highest volume, fastest processes, and quickest deliveries, but the stakes continue to grow.
Every company is vying to squeeze more efficiency out of their operations. In the name of efficiency, companies are cutting corners. From time-consuming routine maintenance being skipped, to putting more pressure on employee performance, parcel, warehouse, and distribution businesses are looking for ways to reduce overall turnaround time and costs. At the same time, many companies in the Supply Chain industry take a cyclical approach to adapting existing systems and technologies rather than investing in solving the root problem, which could mean an entire overhaul.
The answers to this never-ending efficiency race is clear – more volume, less downtime. But the “how” is often misconstrued for scaling-back rather than innovating forward.
The key to increased operational efficiency lies in innovation.
Efficiency Starts with Design
First and foremost, no business or product is the same. Too often business is viewed as purely a science rather than an art, especially in the Supply Chain industry. Even if the product or service delivered is the same, no two companies share exactly the same processes, people, or infrastructure.
Finding solutions that are specifically designed for your business is critical for efficiency – no exceptions.
Bespoke designs allow you to fine-tune technology to your business, not the other way around.
Aegis Sortation’s sorters, for example, are designed based on tried-and-true practices, yet are customizable to every company’s unique operation. Lightweight materials are combined with strategic design to offer maximum strength while maintaining ease and flexibility in installation, operation, and maintenance.
Rather than settling for standards, companies who want to achieve greater efficiency must look first to technology that is designed to be efficient.
Reducing Installation Time & Increasing Maintenance Ease
In order to decrease downtime, having a solution that can be easily installed and maintained over time cannot be overemphasized.
The typical installation of new technology often requires special tools and personnel expertise. These factors lead to increasing pressures to get to commission and inefficiencies that cost time and money.
Furthermore, while installation downtime can at least be planned for, maintenance is also constrained by these factors of inefficiency, leading to increased, unplanned downtime.
Decreasing your downtime is a quick way to get the jump on competitors and become a true industry leader.
Removing Barriers to Efficient Operation with Smart Shoe Technology
It’s no secret that a missing or broken shoe can cost you serious time (and money!). Discovering and locating the issue, coupled with the repair itself is a major process.
Here’s the good news: Smart Shoe and Smart Pin technology now makes Real-Time Missing Shoe and Missing Pin Detection a reality.
By embedding a RFID tag in each sorter and pin, each shoe can now be uniquely identified, monitored, and controlled by an RFID reader. This means that you can quickly (in real-time) and accurately detect missing shoe and/or missing pin and eliminate the need for extended examination and repair. In fact, this technology means that we can pinpoint the issue and resolve in without having to shutdown the sorter at all. We can simply choose to not allocate the broken or missing shoe to a divert/package sort and keep everything running.
This results in dramatically reduced maintenance times and less hands-on, active maintenance in the event of a broken shoe.
We see this as a true differentiator, both for us and for our customers.
